60th Division, made up entirely of 2nd line territorial battalions from London, went to France in June, 1916 where they remained until they were sent to Salonika at the end of the year. During the six months spent on the Western Front they were employed in holding the front line around Arras and were one of the few divisions in France to avoid the Battle of the Somme.

On 13th October, 1916, the 2/16th London battalion of 179 Brigade, 60th Division moved into the front line In the Neuville St Vaast sector near Arras where they remained until 19th October. The battalion diary entry for 15th October recorded that there were two men killed and another two wounded but gives no further details. William Frampton died from wounds on 16th October and may have been one of the two men wounded.
